Englischer Garten, Munich, Germany

Report by Nomad: Englisher Garten is a huge downtown park in Munich. The big open lawn in the south/west corner is world-renown as a public nudist spot. I had been told by many people over the years that this is a must-visit place... imagine hundreds of naked people in a park in downtown Munich! My own experience of visiting there was a little bit of a disappointment. I still do reccommend it, but I have a more realistic impression of this park. I should point out that I was there in the summer, on a weekend, during a hot sunny spell - ideal conditions. I would report the following. About one person in 10 was actually nude, the rest in bathing suits or fully clothed. Only about one person in 10 was a woman. So you can imagine that most of the "nude" section of the park was actually mostly guys lying about in their bathing suits. But the nudity does happen and there are plenty of people hanging around to see the nudity. Not the best atmosphere. Perhaps it has changed over the years. A channel of the Isar River flows at the east boundry of the nude area and people dip in it to cool off.

Directions: The park is just north/east of the central core of the city, just touching the main ring-street. There is a big art gallery, "Haus der Kunst" at the south end of the park, so if you walk around behind the art gallery you come upon the field. History/Status: Officially allowed in that area. Environment: German weather can get cool but sunny summer days should be fine. Facilities: public washrooms and snack bars in walking distance Parking: You may find some street parking just west of the park, but it is limited. I suggest taking the subway. Get a map. Accommodation: City hotels are everywhere.
