Sotavento Beach, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Report by Angelita. It is in the south of Fuerteventura, along the south eastern coast of the peninsula of Jandia, that you find the best beaches. I might very well say some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the world. It is really one huge long beach, about 30 kilometers or 20 miles long. You may walk it but will have to climb over a few hills or mountains if the tide is high. The water of the Atlantic is absolutely clean, turquoise, and reasonably warm, some 22 degrees C in the winter. There is a strong surf quite often but not always. Here, too, as in the north of the island, you will find the stone windsheds, but most sunbathers lie on the sand or on the slopes of the dunes.

Directions: The ideal beaches will be found up along the east coast from Morro del Jable. That is where Sotavento Beach begins. You can take a public bus and walk down a stony road to the beach or rent your own car, car rental is very cheap in the Canaries. Most people who go there bring their lunch and spend the whole day on the beach. Facilities: Not much unless you are near a hotel. Please do not leave anything behind. History/Status: These beaches, and in fact most of the island has a high degree of acceptance for nudity. Accommodation: The best places are in Morro del Jable, nearby. There are a few hotels along Sotavento, but the coast is not (yet) destroyed by development.
